If Moose Could Laugh
Port Aux Basque Ferry
You board a ferry in North Sydney, Nova Scotia for an overnight journey to Port Aux Basque, Newfoundland. For a few dollars they have 'overnight' chairs, lounges really, and for a few dollars more than that you can get a small cabin which affords some privacy.
Through the mist at daybreak you can see the coast of Newfoundland rise up out of the sea, like "The Rock" that she is.
Rising from the Mist
Newfoundland
Newfoundland was crushed under the weight of a mile of ice during the last ice age, so much so that the land was pressed downwards into the earth!
Today, "The Rock" is still rebounding from that weight and continues to rise bit by bit each year.
These photo's were all taken in June - note the ice and snow!

Western Brook Pond
The highlight of Gros Morne National Park and the World Heritage Site is Western Brook Pond. A too common name for something so incredibly spectacular.

Chris and I had hiked into the pond, about 3/4 of a mile across a flat expanse of wetlands to be met by a view of towering cliffs rising on either side of an 11 mile long "pond". While we were there a ranger told us that we should take the tourist boat ride into the pond to see the most spectacular scenery, anywhere.

We did, and you should to. If you have no other reason to visit Newfoundland other than a visit to Western Brook this will have made the journey worthwhile. It was the most spectacular scenery anywhere.

A narrow fjord 11 miles deep with cliffs rising more than a thousand feet above you on either side, draped in waterfalls...
